Adjusting to dentures takes time and patience. Today we will be sharing our top tips that, if followed during your first week with dentures, will allow for a successful transition to wearing dentures.
For your first 24 hours, the dentures should not be removed, since this provides the gums time to properly heal and adjust to the new appliance. Areas of your mouth may also be sore, so it is vital to eat soft foods such as purees, soups, mac and cheese, and pudding. Depending on your pain level, and if your dentist prescribed them, pain relievers will ease the initial discomfort.
During the first week with dentures, you may experience the following problems, so it is important to know how to address these dilemmas if needed:
- Pain or discomfort- In order to alleviate the first week aches as the mouth adapts, take the prescribed amount of pain-relieving medicine, if your dentist recommends. You should also try to relax your face muscles before eating.
- Difficulty determining which foods to eat- Start off with foods including purees, ice cream, mac and cheese, pudding, soups, applesauce, and other soft foods with similar textures. Scrambled eggs and protein rich drinks can serve as a supplement for potentially lost nutrients in your diet. You should also stay away from tough, crunchy, spicy, or sticky foods. Additionally, make sure to cut your food into smaller pieces to ease chewing, and equally distribute the food in the mouth.
- Difficulty in sensing heat levels- During your first week with dentures you may notice that they make it difficult to sense how hot your food is. In order to avoid burns, let your food adjust to room temperature and test how hot the food is with your lips before putting it in your mouth.
