While bad breath can be caused by various factors, including gum disease and smoking, one of the most common causes is bacteria collecting in your mouth. With braces, food can easily become stuck between the brackets and between teeth, since it may be more difficult to floss. When food particles are not removed, bacteria will begin to accumulate, leading to bad breath. Everybody wants fresh breath, which is why we have compiled a list of our top tips for beating bad breath with braces:
- Brush and Floss Frequently: In addition to brushing your teeth in the morning and at night, with braces you should also brush and floss your teeth after every meal. By brushing and flossing after meals you remove the food particles that are stuck, which would lead to bad breath if they remained in your mouth. Additionally, we recommend that you replace your toothbrush every three to four months, since germs can accumulate in your toothbrush over time.
- Use Appropriate Dental Hygiene Products: Even after brushing and flossing your teeth, bacteria can still be present in your mouth. This is why you should incorporate an antibacterial mouthwash into your dental hygiene routine, since the mouthwash can reach the space between your teeth and kill any germs or bacteria present. A water pick is also a great addition to your routine, since the device serves as an easy way to clean your teeth, the small spaces between your teeth and gums, and the places hardest to reach with braces. You will find that consistently using antibacterial mouthwash and a water pick will help eliminate bad breath and keep your teeth shining!
- Eat Right and Stay Hydrated: Sugary foods and fragrant foods, such as garlic or onion, lead to bad breath, especially if you do not brush your teeth soon after consumption. Additionally, dehydration and a dry mouth increase the production of saliva, which creates an environment that bacteria thrive in. Thus, by drinking a lot of water throughout the day, the growth of bacteria will be prevented, therefore keeping your breath fresh.
