Brushing your teeth twice a day is crucial for maintaining your oral health, and therefore your overall well being. Poor oral hygiene can cause cavities and gum disease, which is a major risk factor in developing more serious health problems, such as heart disease. In order to ensure that your tooth brushing is as beneficial as possible, it is important to choose the best possible toothbrush. Not all toothbrushes contribute positively to your dental health and oral hygiene, which is why we have compiled aspects of a toothbrush to consider when selecting your next toothbrush:
- Type- There are three varieties of toothbrush bristle types: soft, medium, or hard bristles. It is recommended that you use a toothbrush with soft bristles, since medium and hard bristles can be too abrasive and damage your gums and protective enamel. Hard bristles can also expose your tooth roots, which leads to a sensitivity to hot and cold food or drink. You can also choose between manual and electric toothbrushes. When used correctly, both will effectively clean your teeth, however electric toothbrushes typically work better for people that have difficulty brushing their teeth due to limited dexterity. Using electric toothbrushes may also motivate some people to brush more often than using manual toothbrushes.
- Size- Toothbrushes with small heads are typically best, since a smaller toothbrush head allows you to reach all areas of your mouth, even the sides and backs of your molars. A toothbrush is considered to be small if it can only brush about one or two teeth at a time. You will also want a brush that has a handle that is long enough to fit comfortably in your hand during use.
- Reliability- While purchasing a cheap toothbrush may be enticing, a toothbrush with a lower price may also mean lower quality. This means it may be made of unsafe materials or is ineffective. To ensure you are using a quality toothbrush, choose one made from a reliable manufacturer, since those will have undergone many quality control tests. To guarantee the trustworthiness of the toothbrush you select, ask your dentist for a recommendation or identify a brush with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval.
